San Diego Park Weddings

Looking for a nice park for your ceremony or even reception? Well, we have some information here you might be interested in. This is kind of one of those well-kept secrets because reserving a city or county park is very inexpensive and takes full advantage of our beautiful coastal and inland views. This is just a sampling of parks in San Diego, but one of them might be your perfect place!

Just one word of caution about public parks: you can never be sure that helicopters, dogs, bathing suit-clad onlookers, or noisy children might not also be a part of your special day. Just want you to be prepared! If you are interested in having a wedding in Balboa Park, Mission Bay Park, Presidio Park, or one of San Diego's Shoreline Parks, you will need to obtain a permit from San Diego Park and Recreation permit center located in the Balboa Park Administration Building at 2125 Park Boulevard. The permit center is open Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Recorded information is available at (619) 235-1169 or email parkpermits@sandiego.gov .

Please Note: While we try to make sure that the information below is correct, this is not an official source. For official information about park weddings, visit the San Diego County Parks web site or contact the agency listed below each park.

San Diego Bay La Jolla
Downtown Del Mar
Mission Beach Coronado
Pacific Beach
San Diego Bay

Shelter Island, Harbor Island, Embarcadero Marine Park North and South, Chula Vista Bayside Park

These are all beautiful coastal locations and most have bathrooms nearby. To use one for an event, you need to apply for a permit through the Port District. This is not a reservation and exclusive use of the parks cannot be granted because they are public parks. You must call ahead to get a permit and there is a fee for permits. Permits are not a reservation for the space. The form below is a request for park availability, not an actual permit application. Someone will contact you regarding your permit request with information about fees and park availability. Park reservations are made on a first come, first served basis. Talk to the Port District for more information on this.

Permit Fee: $35 minimum

Downtown
Balboa Park/Presidio Park

Balboa Park is one of San Diego's most beautiful landmarks making it a wonderful place for your special day. Presidio Park is located near the Junipero Serra Museum above Old Town. To reserve a place at one of these parks, all you need to do is obtain a Park Use Permit from Balboa Park Administration Building at 2125 Park Boulevard . The fee is non-refundable and only holds the date and time for a maximum of 4 hours use. Each site varies in maximum people and hours, the park map has specific details on each location.  You may view the park map and availablity on their website by clicking on the links above.  Permits for particular sites are on a first come, first serve basis.  When you call, they will send you a packet with information on each of the sites and their maximum amount of people and everything else you need to know.

Permit Fee: Vary by site.
Hours of use: Vary, but generally 10 am-5 pm (6 pm Daylight Savings), in some areas up to 10 pm depending on lighting.

Mission Beach

Mission Bay Park

Mission Bay has over 4600 acres of green areas, some of which are perfect for a wedding site! Many of the locations have restrooms nearby--we recommend that you check the map for the sites and then drive around to choose the one that fits your ideal wedding location (if possible).  Many of the areas tend to get very crowded on weekends and you must fill out an application to use an area in the park. This application does not guarantee you that spot--it is still first come first serve. You may view the parks map and availablity on their website by clicking on the links above.  To apply for an area in this park, you must contact the Develop Regional Parks 6 months - 1 year in advance.

Permit Fee: Vary by site.
Hours of use: 10 am - 5 pm (6 pm Daylight Savings).
Restrictions: No bottles or glass drinking containers.

Pacific Beach

Kate Sessions Park

This is a beautiful park that overlooks Mission Bay and the rest of San Diego from near Mt. Soledad. It is a large park with bathroom facilities. To use this park, you can file an application with the Pacific Beach Recreation up to a year in advance. There is a maximum of 150 people. This application does not guarantee you that spot--it is still first come first serve. The only restrictions are no bottles or glass drinking containers; you can have alcohol between dusk and dawn. You should see this site before you reserve it;  It's beautiful but it slopes downhill and you need to plan a good area and send someone early the day of the event to make sure you have that area for your event.

Permit Fee: $250 for San Diego residents, $500 for non-residents.
Hours of use: 7 am-11 pm.
Restrictions: No bottles or glass drinking containers.

La Jolla

Cuvier Park (Wedding Bowl)

This is a beautiful, cozy spot with ocean waves crashing nearby and seagulls flying above. It's on Coast Blvd. about a quarter-mile south of Seal Rock and across from Scripps Inn at the end of Cuvier St. It's not really big but it is a powerful, striking place and semi-private because the park is below street level.  A good idea is to rent a room or two at Scripps Inn for bride and groom dressing before the wedding (Scripps Inn 619-454-3391). One drawback is that there is very limited parking and no restrooms. The site is permitted for weddings but not for receptions. Only one permit per day is issued for wedding ceremonies, with up to four hours time allotted- including set up and breakdown.

Permit Fee: $250.00 for San Diego residents and $500.00 for non-residents.
Hours of use: 8 am-8 pm.
Restrictions: No bottles or glass drinking containers.

Scripps Browning Park

This is a wonderful park and is quite large.  It is also on Coast Highway right next to the cove. This park tends to be quite crowded on weekends and has restroom facilities nearby.  The maximum number of people is 80 from September through May and 50 from June through August.  This application does not guarantee you that spot--it is still first come first serve. To fill out an application to use this park, you should contact the Coastal Parks Division as soon as possible.

Permit Fee: $250.00 for San Diego residents and $500.00 for non-residents.
Hours of use: 4 am-8 pm.
Restrictions: No bottles or glass drinking containers

Del Mar

Seagrove Park

This is the park at the end of 15th street at Coast Boulevard - near the old train station. It's a beautiful medium-sized park that slopes. There are no bathrooms but there is a great view. To reserve this park, you need to call the City of Del Mar. If you are not having a reception there (ceremony only) and you have less than 200 people, they'll probably charge you around $500.00. There are restrictions if you do have your reception there like no dancing, no amplified music, but you can have alcohol and glass. You need to obtain a liability policy and the price for reserving the park goes up if you hold your reception there. You can call them for exact prices. It seems to depend on your specific needs.

Permit Fee: Around $500.00 (199 people or less)
Restrictions: No dancing, no amplified music.

Coronado

Coronado Tidelands Park

This is the nice big park near Le Meridian Hotel just after you cross the Coronado Bridge (on the right side). It is very crowded on weekends but has a nice view of the San Diego skyline. You must apply for a permit with the Port District for this park. There are bathroom facilities available.  This is not a reservation and exclusive use of the parks cannot be granted because they are public parks.  (Permits are not a reservation for the space).  Call the Port District for more information about this.
